Misinformation about cancer is very common in the Philippines. Some myths are harmless — but many are dangerous because they lead to delayed diagnosis and missed treatment.
1. “Cancer spreads faster when you biopsy it.”
Truth: A biopsy does NOT make cancer spread.
Biopsy is essential for diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning. Millions of biopsies are done worldwide — safely — every year.
2. “Radiotherapy will burn your organs.”
Truth: Modern radiotherapy is highly targeted. The beam only affects the tumor area and does NOT burn internal organs.
The most common effect is mild skin darkening — similar to a tan.
3. “Herbal cures can replace cancer treatment.”
Truth: No herbal product has ever been proven to cure cancer.
Some herbs may help with symptoms, but relying on them alone delays real treatment — which is dangerous.
4. “If you feel no pain, it’s not cancer.”
Truth: Early cancer usually has NO pain at all.
Many patients discover cancer only when symptoms become advanced.
5. “Using a phone or microwave causes cancer.”
Truth: No scientific evidence shows smartphones or microwaves cause cancer.
They emit non-ionizing radiation — too weak to damage DNA.
6. “Chemotherapy always makes people extremely weak.”
Truth: Modern chemotherapy is personalized. Many patients tolerate it well and continue normal routines.
7. “Only older people get cancer.”
Truth: People of all ages — including young adults and even children — can get cancer.
8. “Cancer is contagious.”
Truth: Cancer is NOT infectious. You cannot catch cancer from touching, hugging, or sharing food.
9. “Sugar feeds cancer — stop eating rice completely.”
Truth: All cells use sugar, not just cancer cells.
You do NOT need to eliminate rice — just practice balanced portions.
10. “If the mass is small, it’s not serious.”
Truth: Even small lumps can be cancer — especially in the breast, thyroid, or lymph nodes.
Why these myths are dangerous
- They delay diagnosis
- They discourage proper treatment
- They make patients rely on unproven methods
- They increase the chance of advanced disease
