Life happens — sometimes you feel sick, your schedule gets disrupted, or transportation becomes a problem. Many patients worry:
The good news: Missing one session is usually okay — as long as you inform your treatment team and make it up quickly.
1. First step: Contact your radiotherapy center right away
Tell the staff why you missed your session. They will:
- reschedule you on the same day or next day
- adjust the treatment calendar
- coordinate with your oncologist
2. Missing ONE session is usually not harmful
Radiotherapy works by giving small daily doses. Missing just one session rarely affects the outcome.
But don’t skip randomly.
3. Missing several sessions in a row can affect treatment
If you miss multiple sessions (3–5 days), cancer cells may start recovering.
That’s why it’s important to return as soon as possible.
4. How your team may “catch up” your treatment
If you miss several days, your doctor may adjust your schedule by:
- adding an extra session on a Saturday
- giving two treatments in one day (AM + PM)** — only if medically safe
- extending the final end date
**This is rarely done and only for certain cases.
5. When missing a session becomes more serious
Radiotherapy is time-sensitive for:
- head & neck cancer
- cervical cancer
- lung cancer
- breast cancer (after surgery)
If these treatments are delayed too much, tumor control decreases.
6. Common reasons patients miss sessions — and what to do
Fever, flu, weakness
Tell the clinic. Most mild illnesses still allow treatment.
Lack of transportation
Ask if the center can adjust your time or help coordinate schedules.
Bad weather or heavy rain
Safety first. Inform the clinic and return the next day.
Side effects
Do not skip sessions without checking with your doctor. Many side effects can be treated.
7. Should I double my dose to make up for it?
Only your radiation oncologist can modify your schedule safely.
8. Key reminders
- Missing 1 session is okay if made up immediately.
- Missing multiple sessions can decrease effectiveness.
- Always inform your treatment team.
- Do not adjust your own schedule.
